Obituary of Phyllis Marie (Edwards) Kopsa
Phyllis M. Kopsa, was born April 26, 1931 to George and Lola (Dettmann) Edwards at their home, 3 miles east and ½ miles south of Mahaska, KS and passed away on September 17, 2020 at the Belleville Health Care Center, at the age of 89 years, 6 months, and 21 days.
Phyllis attended Hopewell Schoolhouse for eight years and then attended and graduated from Narka High School with the class of 1949.
Phyllis was married to Charles (Chuck) Gertison on February 19, 1951 and to this union was born, Peggy Lee, Rebecca Sue, and Charlotte Elizabeth. Chuck preceded her in death in 1966. Phyllis then married Robert (Bob) Kopsa on January 21, 1967. Phyllis helped raise his 4 children, Vaneta, Rebecca, Kevin and Lana. Phyllis worked various jobs and raised the children as Bob farmed.
Phyllis was a long time member of the American Lutheran Church, Belleville, KS.
Phyllis’ hobbies included fishing, camping, finding a good antique, traveling, spending time with loved ones, gardening and knitting. She loved her flowers whether they were inside the house or outside. She also took great pride in her knitting. She made over a thousand knitted hats and mittens for homeless veterans and local churches.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lola Edwards, Brother, Kenneth Edwards, sister, LaDonna Edwards, first husband, Chuck Gertison, daughter, Peggy Lee Iwert, and son-in-law, Thomas Young.
She is survived by her husband Robert (Bob) Kopsa, and son Kevin Kopsa both of Chester, NE; daughters, Rebecca (Mick) Gausmen of Chester, NE, Vaneta (Gerald) Moore of Munden, KS, Rebecca (Arlan) Benyshek of Cuba, KS, Charlotte Young of Chester, NE and Lana Kopsa of Lincoln, NE; 17 grandchildren, Frederick Iwert, Nichole (Sam) Bays, Martina Iwert, John (Diane) Iwert, Adam (Abby) Gausman, Amber (Jesse) Versch, Andrew (Julinne) Moore, Luke (Tracey) Moore, Daniel Moore, Kyle Joy, Laura Joy, James Thieme, Logan (Erica) Thieme, Eva (Derek) Mumm, Calese Young, Kathleen (Anthony) Kuhlmann and Celia Young; 24 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, September 21, 2020 at the Bachelor-Surber Memorial Chapel, with PMA Al Urich, officiating.
Family interment services will be at the National Bohemian (Kopsa) Cemetery, rural Cuba, KS at a later time.
Friends may call from 1 PM until 5 PM on Sunday and after 8 AM on Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church.
