Obituary of Luella C. Hughes
Luella C. Hughes, daughter of Harry A. and Matilda (Tillie) Potter, was born August 14, 1929 on a farm near Sutherland, NE and passed away on March 1, 2025 at the Republic County Hospital, Belleville at the age of 95.
She attended rural schools for two years and finished elementary and high school in Hershey, NE in 1947. She attended Kearney State Teacher’s College and taught in rural schools until 1954 when she briefly attended the School of Commerce and did clerical work in North Platte, NE. In 1956, she worked at Back to the Bible in Lincoln, NE and then learned type-setting to work at the Lincoln Journal-Star. Moving to Colorado Springs, CO in 1967, she worked at the Gazette Telegraph and later served as a matron at Myron Stratton Homes. In 1973, she returned to Nebraska and worked at the Blue Valley Homes in Hebron and resided in Hubbell, NE. She also worked and attended college at the University of Nebraska, and worked at the Belleville Health Care Center and Heartland Care Center. In 1992, she moved to Belleville, KS and on December 3, 1993, she was united in marriage to Walter Hughes. He passed away on June 30, 1995. In 2017, she moved to the Belleville Health Care Center.
She served as pianist, organist and choir director in small churches and gave many piano lessons to children. She was raised in a God-fearing home, as an adult, she received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Lincoln, NE. She attended First Baptist Church in Belleville, Faith Baptist Church in Concordia and was a member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)
Luella was preceded in death by her grandparents, father, mother, step-mother, Phoebe Spence Potter, her husband, Walter; her brother Loren and first wife, Phyllis, brother, Gerald and wife, Darlene, brother Thomas and wife Harriet; infant sister Lela C., sister, Ruth E. Sexton, sister Harriet B. Schaeffer and nephew Spence Potter.
Luella is survived by brother-in-law, Jack Sexton of Denton, NE, sister-in-law Shirley Potter of Scottsbluff, NE; five nieces, four nephews and their families; two step daughters, and their families, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, March 6, 2025 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS with Pastor Kevin Weston, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Hubbell Cemetery, rural Hubbell, NE.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 9 AM until 2 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
