Obituary of Helen A. Smith
Helen A. Smith, the daughter of Lars and Tekla (Danielson) Brown, was born February 14, 1920 in rural Courtland, Kansas and passed away on May 11, 2020 at Belleville Health Care Center, Belleville, KS at the age of 100 years, 2 months, and 27 days.
Helen grew up in the Courtland and Scandia, KS area and graduated from Scandia High School in 1938.
She was united in marriage in Topeka, KS to Vernon Smith on May 18, 1939 and to this union was born one daughter, Ramona. Helen lived on a farm all of her married life in the Scandia Community. She was a homemaker and a farm wife. She stayed on the farm after Vernon’s death in 1991.
Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Scandia, KS. She was active in the UMW and many other activities at the Church.
On May 29, 2008, a tornado hit the farm and destroyed all of the out buildings and broke most of the windows in the house. She got into a closet which saved her life. Helen then lived with Ramona and Gerald until she moved to Belleville on July 4, 2008 into Grandview Apartments.
On November 20, 2011, Helen fell and broke her hip and went to Republic County Hospital and at 9:00 PM was transferred to Salina for hip surgery. She later returned to Republic County Hospital and then to the Belleville Health Care Center for rehab. On December 7, 2011.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Lars and Tekla (Danielson) Brown; husband, Vernon Smith on September 11, 1991; 2 sisters, Alice Lindecrantz and Ruby Stafford; one brother, Lloyd M. Brown; and son-in-law, Gerald Fisher.
She is survived by her daughter, Ramona Fisher, of Cuba, KS;
2 grandchildren, Brenda Cooper of Carbondale, Kansas and Troy Fisher of Wamego, Kansas; six great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Friends may call from One PM until 8 PM on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS.
Family private services will be held on Thursday, May 14, 2020 at Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, Kansas.
Interment will follow at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, KS.
