Dorothy Mahan Obituary

Obituary of Dorothy K. Mahan Dorothy Kathaleen Mahan, the daughter of Walter Phelps and Hermie O. Woolsey Phelps, was born March 31, 1925 at Rock Port, MO and passed away on September 18, 2011 at Republic County-Long Term Care, Belleville, KS at the age of 86 years, 5 months, and 17 days. Dorothy grew up and attended schools at the Star Grade Country School near Rock Port, MO, Atchison County, MO and Hamburg High School at Hamburg, Iowa. Following her schooling, she moved with her mother to the Concordia, KS area where she was involved in restaurant work. On Sept 19, 1958, she was united in marriage to Harold A. Mahan at Concordia, KS. The couple made their home in Concordia for a time and then moved to Scandia, KS where they worked for Freed's Truck Farm for many years and also mowed cemeteries throughout the area. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1981. Dorothy attended the Amana Lutheran Church and was an avid sports fan and liked to read. She was recognized for her attendance at local sporting events. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Harold A. Mahan. Dorothy is survived by two brothers: John Phelps and wife Linda and Ralph Phelps and wife Janice all of Rock Port, MO, two nieces, other relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Scandia, KS with Pastor Mark Imel, officiating. Interment will follow at the Union Valley Cemetery, rural Scandia, KS. Memorials are suggested to the Scandia Library or the Scandia Museum. Friends may call from 12 Noon until 9PM on Wednesday and from 9AM until service time on Thursday at the funeral home at Scandia. Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Scandia, KS is in charge of the arrangements.
