Donald Glen Slaughter, the son of Arthur and Ethel (Hines) Slaughter, was born July 5th, 1934 in Cedar Vale, Kansas and passed away on March 2, 2025 at the Belleville Health Care and Rehab Center at the age of 90.
Donald grew up in Cedar Vale, Kansas where he attended school and graduated from Cedar Vale High School in 1952.
On May 30th, 1954, Donald married Dorothy (Dodds) Slaughter and to this union four daughters were born, Jacque, Winnie, Vickie, and Pat.
Donald started working at the age of 18 for Kansas Power and Light as a meter repairman in Washington, Kansas. He and Dorothy moved to Belleville, KS in 1962 and he worked as the area supervisor for KP&L for over 40 years before retiring. He then helped the City of Belleville set up its gas department and was supervisor for 4 years before retiring in 1997. He was the Fire Chief for the Belleville Fire Department from 1988-1999. Donald also worked for the Sheriff's department with transport and during the fair and drove trucks for the Co-op on and off.
Donald was a member and Elder board member of the Central Christian Church, Lions Club, Belleville Fire Department, and the Belleville Country Club. He was an avid sports fan which included baseball, football, basketball, golf, and racing. He was a coach of baseball, and for multiple years he refereed football and basketball and umpired baseball. Donald enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching all high school activities which included always being close by to observe his grandchildren during football and band practices. He attended all high school sports and escorted officials on and off the field and court and was recognized by the high school for his years of commitment to the sports community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ethel Slaughter; siblings, Pete and Bernice Slaughter, Arthur Jr. and Jody Slaughter, Virginia and George Uhls, and Florence Burns; children, Jacque and Don Johannes, and Winnie Slaughter.
Donald is survived by his wife, Dorothy Slaughter of Belleville KS; daughters, Vickie (Rick) Hagen of Belleville KS, Pat (Lester) Bergstrom of Cuba, KS; nephew, Steve Burns of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Joshua (Jennifer) Johannes of Little Rock, AR; Christopher (Leah) Johannes of Sherwood, AR; Amanda (Kevin) Schroeder of Fairfield, CA; Galen (Kesley) Hagen of Belleville, KS; Shelby (Ashley) Hagen of Concordia, KS; Ethan Bergstrom of Overland Park, KS; Alex (Kylee) Bergstrom of Seneca, KS; Spencer Bergstrom of Cuba, KS, and his 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, March 7, 2025 at the Central Christian Church, Belleville, KS with Lon Hardy, officiating.
Interment will follow at the Belleville Cemetery, Belleville, Kansas.
Visitation and Viewing will be held from 1 PM until 7 PM on Thursday, March 6th at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Belleville, KS where the family will greet friends from 5 PM until 7 PM on Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to the Meadowlark Hospice.
