Obituary of Charlotte L. Childs

            Charlotte L. Childs, the daughter of Allen Glen Harden and Mary L. (Ferguson) Harden, was born December 10, 1934 in Belleville, Kansas.  Mr. Harden passed away and she later was raised by her step-father, John P. Miller and Mary L. (Ferguson) Miller.  Charlotte passed away on September 22, 2021 at the Republic County Hospital-ISB at the age of 86 years, 9 months and 12 days.

            Charlotte grew up in Belleville, graduating from Belleville High School.   She attended Ft. Hays State University where she was a cheerleader.

            On March 22, 1953, she was united in marriage to Richard L. “Dick” Childs and to this union was born two sons:  Barry and Jim.   The couple made their home in rural Republic County for many years, moving to Belleville in recent years.  He preceded her in death in 2014.

            Charlotte was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS where she was active in numerous committees through the years among them being the chairman of the Food Stand for 11 years and a member of the Church Choir and Bells.

            She was an active 4-H Leader for the Liberty Rose Creek Club and served on the Kansas Junior Miss Board and as chair.   Charlotte also enjoyed her active participation in the EHU and PEO Chapter BM.

            Charlotte was a member of the Republic County Healthcare Foundation and Hospital Board for 2 decades.    She also served on the rural school district board.   Charlotte and her husband, Dick, received the Master Farmer Award in 1999 along with serving on the Republic County Extension Council.

            In addition to her countless volunteer activities, Charlotte embraced the many roles of life on the farm.   It seemed she could do anything and everything and made supporting her family a priority.    Charlotte also enjoyed sewing, reading, playing bridge, photography, golf, bowling and spending time at the lake.

            Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Miller; and her husband Richard L. “Dick” Childs.

            She is survived by two sons, Barry (Susan) Childs of Belleville, KS and Jim (Pati) Childs of Monument, CO; 8 grandchildren, Katie (Kelly) Struebing and Kurt (Kelli) Childs all of Belleville, Matt Childs of Nashville, TN, Amanda Childs of Denver, CO,  Laura Childs of Oklahoma, Greg (Rachel) Janitell and Steve (Ginger) Janitell all of Colorado Springs, CO, and  Christina (Robert) Klamser of Denver, CO; 11 great grandchildren, Carson, Brady, Collin, Leah, Harrison, Shepard, Magnolia, Addie, Coltin, Reed, and Harper; one brother, John Miller of McPherson, KS; other relatives, and many friends.

          Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 27, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church, Belleville, KS with Reverend Sang Hak Lee, officiating.

            Interment will follow in the Belleville Cemetery.

            The casket has been closed.  Friends are welcome to sign the register book from 1 PM until 6 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.  

            The family will greet friends prior to the services on Monday, September 27, 2021 from 10 AM until 11 AM at the First United Methodist, Belleville, KS.

            In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Church or the Republic County Health Care Foundation.
